GCS members meet up in Hong Kong!

start a friendship between GCS member sher_na and Tanya.

It all began with Tanya's enquiry about the colourful, dainty flowers of Oncidium 'Elishea Hidajat' which caught her attention when sherna posted its picture on the Green Culture Singapore (GCS) forum. That was also how the friendship between sher_na and Tanya, whose real names are Wenny and Loventana, respectively, was forged. They have a common interest in orchids that transcended the age barrier.

Tanya was pleasantly surprised when sher_na arranged for a meeting with her while she was on holiday with her husband in Hong Kong last December. To Tanya, this was her first time that she would be meeting up with someone from overseas whom she got to know from an online forum.

The two friends met up and went to the Mongkok Flower Market to look for orchids. When they were there, sher_na and Tanya zoomed in to those few shops selling orchids, paying special attention on those that stocked slipper orchids. Sher_na was attracted to the beautiful flowers of Paphiopedilum armeniacum and Paph. micranthum. However, these Paphiopedilum species would be next to impossible to bloom in Singapore. The plants were on sale at very affordable prices, probably due to the fact that these plants are mass-produced in the Mainland.

Earlier this month, May also flew over to Hong Kong for a holiday where she met up with Tanya. May also took the opportunity to explore the Mongkok Flower Market where Tillandsia, African violets and many interesting gesneriads were on sale, in addition to orchids.

Read on to find out more about the Mongkok Flower Market and why plant lovers who visit Hong Kong should pay the place a visit!
